I’ve been Creative Pt. 1 – D.I.Y Product Lightbox

For those that know me, this doesn’t come as a shock -- I’m rubbish at D.I.Y! I can’t paint a wall! In saying that I seem to be able to construct things and from time to time make it so it doesn’t fall apart (immediately).

On Sunday I decided put my hands to making a couple of things that I wanted but didn’t want to pay for…recession and all. The first was a lightbox the second was a home made TRX Suspension trainer.

Part 1 -- The DIY Product Lightbox

People will be like “why does he need one of those?”. Well I’m working on a climbing blog and as part of it I need to do some reviews of product, it’s nice to have your own branded images on a blog it also means you can focus on specific features of products that you are review.

Someone sent me a picture of the La Spotiva Solutions that they’d taken themselves…it made be sigh. The image looked like an eBay photo with flash reflections and under exposed. :(

There had to be a cheap solution to this. So I started Google’n product photography and found a DIY Lightbox tutorial. I didn’t follow it completely i.e. using IKEA frost paper but the rest was the same.

So what you need to create a DIY Product Lightbox is:

  • Cardboard box -- Crisp box will do
  • Stanley Knife -- Needs to be sharp
  • 3 x A2 Sheets Tracing Paper -- Medium weight
  • Duct or Parcel Tape -- I used green parcel tape because that’s all I had
  • 30cm ruler
  • 3 x Desktop laps -- 70Watt Bulbs

Then follow these directions:

I haven’t bought the lights yet. I used what I had around the flat. Here are some of the results I got:

When I buy the lights I’ll post an update and you’ll see how good it works.

The problem with these images is the inconsistent light coming from each angle, once the light is even from each side it will look the money. THE MONEY!!
